it was the warmest of weather, the coldest of weather
its been a crazy week for training back home in nz, thats for sure.
i arrived, and after having the mandatory 2 cruise days after a massive flight, met up with roly and big jim for a couple of rides at the end of last week, ended up knocking up about 4 hours a day in the glorious sunshine and warm wind, temperature was about 16-20deg and i was loving it.
change to this week however and i headed out on tuesday and got myself into a right mess.
the day started out fine, we headed up into the port hills, going to cut out a few laps of summit road and get some good climbs in the legs. we headed up into the hills and it got a bit windy, and the cold southerly wind picked up and got quite cold by the time we reached the top. we rode along summit road before dropping down into lyttleton to head round the bays. this is where my troubles started as on the way down it started to spit with rain, and by the time i hit lyttleton it was actually sleeting/snowing for about 10mins. was enough to get me soaked but stupidly i boxed on and carried on riding through it.
coming into the last hour of the ride the wind was blowing pretty strong and i was wrecked, and bloody cold. heading back up along summit road i had to wave goodbye to the guys i was riding with and went into survival mode, i had a massive ice-cream headache i was that cold and was shivering like mad.
by the time i got back to my front door i was in a state. it took me 5 mins to get my keys for the door out of my wallet cause my hands were shaking that badly, another 5 to try get my bike in the door cause my legs were that stiff from the cold, then a good solid 20min shower on max temp just to try heat up. i had thick winter gloves on and my fingers were still frozen, to the point where they got painfull when i put them under the hot water. all in all a pretty shit day at the office, then yesterday was glorious sunshine and warm again. god only knows what its going to do today. i think packing a raincape in my back pocket for the next couple of weeks will be a good idea.
